Brad Hathaway

Word Guy

Brad Hathaway has been a professional writer for over twenty years providing reviews, news and features for newspapers, magazines and websites. Before relocating to the San Francisco Bay Area he established a national voice in the theater community from Washington, DC.

Writing is a second career for Brad. He spent thirty years working for the legislative branch of the Federal government, first on staffs of Members of the House of Representatives, then on committee staffs and finally as a senior executive in the non- partisan investigative arm of the Congress, GAO.

In the 1990s Brad began reviewing theater for the weekly newspapers of the Connection Newspaper chain in Arlington and Alexandria on the Virginia side of the Potomac River. Ultimately, he contributed over 850 articles to those papers. Later, he began a monthly column on theatre in Washington DC for Capitol Community News' The Hill Rag which ran for over ten years.

While writing for print outlets, Brad came early to the digital world of the internet. He became the Broadway correspondent for Musical Stages Online, the website of the magazine published in London, and the Washington correspondent for US based Theatre.Com.

In 2001 Brad established Potomac Stages, the first comprehensive website covering both community and professional theater in Washington, Maryland and Virginia. For eight years he wrote at least one review and one news item each business day, creating a valuable portrait of one of the most vibrant theater communities in the nation. The archive of that site has been established at the Michelle Smith Performing Arts Library of the University of Maryland.

In the 1990s he began writing features for Show Music Magazine. Since then, he has also contributed to American Theatre Magazine, the Sondheim Review and later Everything Sondheim, Stage Directions and Entertainment Design magazines and a regular feature on design in regional theaters for Live Design Online.

In 2010 Brad launched the weekly column Theatre Shelf: Books, CDs and DVDs for the Theatre Lover carried on multiple websites.

In 2014, Brad was invited to represent the United States in an international symposium of theater critics at the International Theatre Festival of Kerala in Thrissur, India where he presented a paper on copyright issues. That paper was subsequently published in Critical Stages, the journal of the International Association of Theatre Critics.

In 2008, Brad was elected to the Executive Committee of the American Theatre Critics Association. He served as the Association's treasurer from 2011 to 2014. In 2013-2014, and again beginning in 2015, he served as the vice chair of the Association’s Executive Committee.
